The Workshop

Simon will share practices that propose ways to collaborate tenderly with our environment, the materials around us and each other. There will be opportunities to work solo and collectively, to leave the studio to work outdoors and to return to develop dance scores with found materials; co-

creating precarious environments in which to move.

Over the last 16 years Simon has located much of his practice in the valley close to his rural home. Walking and encountering places, objects and events, he responds physically, making performances on foot, often fleeting, ephemeral and playful.

He recently developed ‘studies’, a gallery performance with a table, exploring remembrance and the often out of balance, transient relationships between body, object and sound.

Simon Whitehead

Simon is a Movement Artist. Based in Rural Wales for the last 24 years, his works respond to circumstance through movement and image and may manifest as solo actions or social choreographies, often working with the public, other artists, animals and places.

The workshop will share various images, objects and diagrams to stimulate the imagination of our moving bodies.

Working with the metaphors and descriptions of the exercises that is inclusive to the group, we stand equally and work together to understand, share, and yet each of us to continue to work on our own inquiries and studies. We invite our whole body and mind to work co-opratively to awaken and cultivate the physical abilities. Using both improvisation and set materials, we knead our dance. It supports discovering the sensations and motions as well as helping to develop the physical memory. We will dedicate to move ‘healthily’.

The workshop aims to have a sense of developmental journey towards performative state. Through tasks we will explore compositions with other bodies in the space.

Storytelling Week and Members’ Stories project

Posted on 26 January 2018 by Admin Posted in General information, Newsflash .

For Storytelling week, we are running a program of classes themed around disability heritage as part of our Members’ Stories Project.
Heritage themed dance classes will explore disability history through creative movement and will interpret and create stories in dance based on three themes: Disability and protest, disability and performance and the end of asylums.

We want people to learn about disability heritage which often goes unshared because usually it is the powerful people in society who get to tell their story.

And also, when we celebrated our 20th anniversary a couple of years ago now, we realised we needed to tell stories about our members, some of who have been with us from the very beginning in 1996 – We’re doing this with a whole heritage project about dance and disability and these classes are part of that where we can share and explore some of the things we’ve found out.

Also included in the project:

-a research project about Indepen-dance and the wider context of dance and disability
-Volunteer group and visits to archives.
-Creating a film with interviews that tell the stories of our members.
-The creation of our very own archive
-A small publication about the heritage of dance and disability
-A sharing event on the 30th March at The CCA for the project

If you want to learn more, or volunteer, share your story, photos or attend our sharing event, email admin@indepen-dance.org.uk
